This is not my first time at the rodeo. The Boo is turning 3 so I’ve been through the whole “is my kid sick?” thing many times over. From colds to high fevers to pink eye to projectile vomit, I’m familiar with the symptoms of a sick child. I even had to laser focus on them with the Boo because his massive ear infections did not lead to any sort of ear pulling or sleep problems, just a subtle shift in demeanor.
The Bean just started at a day care facility when we made the move out here to Seattle. For the first 2 ½ weeks I was back to work before the move, some ladies that love me cared for my baby. So, she wasn’t exposed to the day care germies until a couple of weeks ago. She’s always had a lot of eye goopies, but I noticed a distinct increase in eye goopies in the last week. Does she have conjunctivitis? Her whites are still white and so are the goopies so I just kept an eye on it.
Tuesday morning she woke up with both eyes oozing with yellowish greenish goop. Without a doubt, this girl has conjunctivitis. I took her temp about an hour after she woke up and it was 99.5. OK, low grade fever, yellow-green goopies. It’s a pretty clear Mommy diagnosis. Her eyes weren’t very pink but I could have sworn that the Boo’s weren’t either when he had it so I went with the goop color and elevated temp. Her temp went down to normal with some Tylenol so that was good. She was in good spirits but clingy like she had been all weekend. Aw, poor lovey was getting sick and trying to tell me.
So, off we went to the pediatrician’s office. Both the kids have pre-scheduled well visits next week so I was a little bummed that we had a sick visit crashing the “get to know the doctor” party but a Mommy’s gotta do what a Mommy’s gotta do.
The doctor we saw was actually a family practitioner that was pinch hitting in the peds’ office since they were overbooked. Lucy had no elevated temp, not a lot of goopies in the eye at the moment (I left a little bit of yellow crusties so they could see what I saw), and no pink eyes. Doc said she did not have conjunctivitis. Say WHAT? But… how… the goop was like GREEN, lady, what the hell? That’s not normal. Is it?
According to family doc, the Bean has so much mucus in her little nose that it turned color and oozed out of her eyeballs. Yep. Evidently, it does that. Normal? I asked if it was because her little nose got squished in delivery and the doctor said “No, all 3 of my kids had this happen.” How has no one talked about this? My world turned upside down. All my life, odd-colored eye oozings were considered some type of communicable ailment and NOT NORMAL. She obliged me with a prescription for antibiotics in case the little lady’s eyes actually did turn pink and it WAS pink eye after all, but assured me that she was pretty sure it wasn’t.
I left feeling a little bit like a smacked ass and realizing that for this situation, it really was my first time at the rodeo.
Silly Mommy, I’m not sickies!
