Original Plan for Day 2, 7/25:
• Drive from Lafayette, IN to Fergus Falls, MN: 707 miles, approx. 12 hours 45 minutes with stops
• Travel into Central Time Zone, gaining an hour
• Mitigate toddler meltdowns with 27 episodes of Dinosaur Train loaded on a Kindle Fire (thanks to Kiki and Peeta!)
• Attempt to bathe all four weary travelers
• Wonder what Fergus Falls, MN has to offer
• Decide we don’t care what it has to offer and use hour gained to sleep
Once again, we left an hour later than we anticipated and took way more stops than we wanted so it ended up being about a 14 or 15 hour day, I can’t recall exactly. I went ahead of the Hubs so that I could stop as necessary and then go a bit faster to make up for the stops while the Hubs kept pace in the truck. This worked well and I was about an hour ahead of him most of the day.
The drive through Northern Indiana was beautiful. They had rows and rows of hundreds of windmills, which was just breathtaking. The pic through the car window doesn’t do it justice, but you can get a sense of the rows:
Once we got into Illinois we hit Chicago right at rush hour so that set us back a bit. We then stopped at a really cool highway oasis in Des Plaines, IL, that is actually built OVER the highway so you can watch cars rush past underneath you while you eat. They also had a replica of the Mystery Machine, so we couldn’t resist a photo op.
We drove up through Wisconsin to get to Minnesota and, let me tell ya, the drive through Wisconsin is not so pretty. Just not much going on with the landscape. We hit Minneapolis right at evening rush hour, setting us back a little bit more, so not great planning in terms of traffic for Day 2.
The kids did really well. The Boo watched Hop, aka “The Bunny Movie” about 17 times and that kept him pretty happy and occupied. The Bean cried as we went up in altitude but otherwise was chill as can be as long as I stopped to nurse her every couple of hours.
Happy to be out of the car for a few minutes!
All in all, and uneventful day of driving, albeit a very long one. I got the kids bathed in the hotel and the Hubs got a shower, so 3 out of 4 wasn’t bad, as I planned to shower first thing in the morning. Little did I know what a mistake that would turn out to be…
My weary little road warriors!
